Hand Embroidered Siddreye

Syria traditional clothing dresses folk Allepo Aleppo Weiss-Armush

This siddreye (short jacket) is shown with a wool belt from Damascus and an unusual thob made of rayon brocade. The thob is at least thirty years old but has not been worn. It features machine stitching and colorful facing at the hem, with a diyal panel at the back embroidered with palm tree cross stitch. Seams are outlined with herringbone stitch embroidery.

A closeup of the cotton jacket is featured elsewhere on this page. Above the left sleeve, the artist has signed her name and the year she completed her embroidery: 1950.
