Blue Wool Thob

Syria traditional clothing dresses folk Damascus Weiss-Armush

This women's garment is unusual in many ways. First, it's blue rather than the more common black, or the red color that was sometimes worn for festive occasions. Blue dresses were a favorite for weddings.

Second, it's made of wool, while perhaps 95% of Syrian garments are cotton.

Third, the medalions and geometric patterns are hand embroidered using a couching stitch to overlay gold colored cord. The work is similar to that seen in the woman's abbaya that follows.
