Black Taqsireh Jacket

Syria traditional clothing dresses folk Damascus

Similar to the red velvet taqsireh, this lighter model was worn in warmer weather by both men and women. . The fabric is heavy black grosgrain, probably rayon. and has a tightly woven ribbed appearance with a subtle glimmer, as if in a water reflection.

Constructed by hand, with breast pockets in the lining, the jacket's exquisite hand embroidery gives an understated yet regal finish.

Although this style was worn throughout Syria, the actual jacket was purchased from the Tentmakers Market (Sharia al Khayamiya) in Cairo, where one merchant continues to deal in the traditional taqsireh. Less complex models are available for immediate purchase, but this jacket was special ordered and delivered three days later.
