Embroidered Sirwal

Syria traditional clothing dresses folk Damascus Weiss-Armush

Sewn from sturdy cotton fabric, these sirwal were embellished with European designs of flower pots and borders probably were obtained from the DMC embroidery thread pattern book.

Some textile anthropologists believe that Orthodox pilgrims from Russia and the Balkans who visited the 'Holy Land' sites may have influenced the embroidery parrerns of the region.

These sirwal have been cut off under the knee and a casing inserted for elastic.
