Red Velvet Taqsireh Jacket with Gilded Embroidery
Syria traditional clothing dresses folk Damascus

Both men and women wear the taqsireh jacket made in Damascus. (Taqsireh means 'shortened').

The fabric is usually velvet, and the garment is designed to fall open without any sort of fastener, offering glimpses of the under garments. The sleeves are loosely cut with a decorated slit about 5 inches long. Slightly shorter than standard wrist length, the cut was to enable the cuffed full sleeves of a flowing silken blouse to peek through, presenting an image of wealth and stylish good taste.
