Thob from Qalamoon


From the mountanous Qalamoon province just north of Damascus, a dress of cotton poplin with stunning pointed sleeves related to the 'Malak' or queen's dress from Bethlehem. The plain body and skirt of the garment indicates that it was worn with a long coat (qumbaz) and that the heavily decorated wings fell from the coat's 3/4 length sleeves.

Silk embroidery patterns include xxx , and the skirt panels are joined by the xxx stich.

Dresses from Qalamoon sometimes featured two columns of embroidery as decoration for the front seams. The bodice was usually quite plain, an indication that it was hidden under some sort of jacket or coat.
