The kasrawaniyye or homsiyye is a heay black silk square scarf brocaded with silver threads that was a prized headcovering in the villages north of Damascus. Usually woven in Allepo or Homs (as the name suggests), this expensive fabric was woven by a master craftsman who memorized the complicated patterns and did not use a model.

The headcovering is a significant part of traditional dress, as it imparts information about the wearer's economic status as well as region of origin. Most of the silk woven in Syria was from local production. This weaving technique was known as ghall and was the lancé brocading method.
