The weaving of metallic threads into silk dates back to Al Andaluz in Islamic Spain. In the early twentieth century, the amount of gold and silver used in the silk industries of Aleppo and its neighbor Homs increased significantly.

Aleppo silk was exported throughout the Arab world and was sold in dress lengths of about eight yards called maqta.
